API 650 "welded storage tanks" API standard 650 special tank is a standard developed and issued by the American Petroleum Institute (API), which specifies the minimum requirements for the design, manufacture, installation and inspection of welded storage tanks.

API standard 650 special tank, floating roof tank is composed of vertical cylindrical tank wall and floating roof, which is floating on the surface of liquid storage. The volume of floating roof storage tank is generally large, and its bottom plate is arched edge plate. The difference between floating roof tank and other types of storage tank is that there is a floating top cover floating on the surface of liquid storage, and the top cover floats up and down with the rise and fall of liquid storage.

The tank shall be filled with water to the design liquid level unless height is limited as noted in API 620 standard Q.8.1. After the tank is filled with water and before the pneumatic pressure is applied, anchorage, if provided, shall be tightened against the hold-down brackets. All welds in the API standard 650 special tank shell, including the corner weld between the shell and the bottom, shall be visually checked for tightness.
