Simplified design requirements for API standard 650 duplex stainless steel tanks
Some defects may be found after the regular safety inspection for the API standard 650 duplex stainless steel tanks. The common API standard 650 duplex stainless steel tanks defects are: Tank cracks, tank welding defects. The cracks on the base metal, surface and near surface of the tank wall shall be eliminated by grinding with circular arc, and then magnetic particle inspection or re inspection shall be carried out. Cracks in heat affected zone: generally, grinding method is used to eliminate cracks, and magnetic particle or dye flaw detection is used to confirm that there is no crack, and then repair welding or grinding smooth transition.
Ultrasonic Examination of Butt-welds in PlatesButt-welds in all tank wall courses subjected to a maximum actual operating membrane tensile stress, perpendicular to the welded joint, greater than 0.1 times the specified minimum tensile strength of the API standard 650 duplex stainless steel tanks plate material shall be completely examined.Butt-welds in API 620 oil tank wall courses subjected to maximum actual operating membrane tensile stress, perpendicular to the welded joint, less than or equal to 0.1 times the specified minimum tensile strength of plate material shall be spot examined in accordance with Figure Q-2.
Before the start of erection, inspect each API 650 tank foundation to ensure that it is level and acceptable to receive Work. Remove temporary erection attachments welded to the interior or exterior of the API standard 650 duplex stainless steel tanks shell or to the bottom by arc gouging, and grind weld area smooth.
