Elastic displacements of API standard 650 stainless steel storage tanks

In Appendix E to API 650 oil storage tank, the maximum values of inertia force, pulse pressure and convection pressure are superimposed, and tend to be conservative.In GB50341, only pulse pressure is calculated for API standard 650 stainless steel storage tanks tanks below 5000 m.

The cleanliness of the API standard 650 stainless steel storage tanks has a great influence on the safety of the tank and the quality of the oil stored. Keeping the API standard 650 stainless steel storage tanks clean can slow down the corrosion of the tank wall and reduce the pollution to the oil. If the inside of the API standard 650 stainless steel storage tanks is not cleaned all the year round, a lot of rust and metal impurities will be produced in the tank. These impurities will cause the oil to slowly oxidize and deteriorate. The impurities mixed into the oil will also block the filter and oil circuit, causing oil supply failure.

In this project, an area of steel storage oil tank wall is constructed of ASTM A285, Grade C, steel plate that is 5/8-in. thick and has spot-radiographed, double-welded butt joints. The wall is subject to tension in a meridional direction and to compression in a latitudinal direction. The values of R1 and R2 at the point under consideration are 75 in. and 300 in. respectively. A corrosion allowance of 1/16 in. is required. The computed (meridional) tensile stress, stc, in the net thickness after deduction of the corrosion allowance is 6000 lbf/in.2.
