Design requirements for API 650 ambient temperature tanks

The API Std 650 standard published by the American Petroleum Institute (API) is designed to provide the petroleum industry with welded steel tanks for use in the API 650 ambient temperature tanks storage of petroleum products and other liquid products commonly handled and stored by the various branches of the petroleum industry.

Proper use of API 650 ambient temperature tanks and precautions:
1. The API 650 ambient temperature tanks must be used within the safe height range;
2. Check before use to ensure that the safety valve and breathing valve are flexible and easy to use;
3. The explosion-proof and fire-proof safety measures for oil tanks are implemented effectively;
4. The oil level in the API 650 ambient temperature tanks should be accurately measured when receiving and delivering oil, so as to prevent overflow or empty;
5. In the process of receiving and sending oil, the flow rate of oil should be controlled, and it should not be too fast to avoid electrostatic accidents.

The thickness of the API 650 ambient temperature tanks annular bottom plates shall be in accordance with Table Q-4 (for steel or aluminum, as applicable). The thicknesses shown are minimums. The ring of annual plates shall have a circular outside circumference, but it may have a regular polygonal shape inside the tank shell with the number of sides equal to the number of annular plates. These pieces shall be butt-welded in accordance with Q.7.1.1, Item b. The plates of the first shell course shall be attached to the annular bottom plates by a weld as required by API 620 oil tank 5.9.5 except when a full-penetration weld is used or required (see Q.7.1.1). Butt-welds in annular plates shall be not closer than 12 in. from any vertical weld.
