Design and construction of foundations for API standard 650 flat-bottom steel tanks

API 650 is the standard for welded tanks for oil storage. It specifies the design, manufacturing, welding, inspection and installation requirements of oil tanks. API 650 API standard 650 flat-bottom steel tanks is widely used in storage tanks with internal pressure less than or equal to 2.5 PSI, used to store products such as crude oil, gasoline, chemicals, and produced water. BBN has extensive experience in API standard 650 flat-bottom steel tanks API 650 tanks with diameters between 8'-300', suitable for refineries, terminals, pipeline facilities and other customers.

Large-scale vertical API standard 650 flat-bottom steel tanks mostly use internal tank bottom heating coils to heat the medium stored in the storage tanks. The heating coils are mostly smooth tube structures arranged in an annular circle along the bottom of the API standard 650 flat-bottom steel tanks. Commonly used heating methods include hot oil circulation heating method and hot water steam circulation heating method. The hot oil circulation heating method is to continuously extract part of the liquid medium from the storage tank, and then return it to the container to mix with the medium in the tank after heating, and the heat is quickly transferred through mechanical stirring.

In this project a cylindrical tank 75 ft in diameter is designed for an internal pressure of 0.5 lbf/in.2 gauge in the vapor space. The plate material is ASTM A131 Grade B steel for thicknesses of 1/2 in. and less.
The top course of the butt-welded cylindrical sidewall is 1/4 in. thick. The tank API standard 650 flat-bottom steel tanks roof is a conical shape with a 2:12 slope and a 1/4 in. thickness with single full-fillet welded lap joints. The maximum design liquid level is 6 in. below the plane of juncture of the roof and sidewall.
